Cosmos is native to scrub and meadowland in Mexico where most of the species occur, Florida and the southern United States, Arizona, Central America, and to South America in the north to Paraguay in the south.
Cosmos are one of the most popular of all flowers grown in North America.
Did you know? Cosmos originated in Mexico and South America. In Mexico, priests grew Cosmos in their mission gardens. The perfectly placed petals prompted them to name the flower "Cosmos", which is a Greek word meaning harmony or ordered universe.
Cosmos is a member of the Compositae plant family. Today, there are approximately 20 identified varieties or species of Cosmos, including 2 annuals called Cosmos Sulphureus and Cosmos Bipinnatus, which are the most common to household gardens. Cosmos love the heat and sun and need little water once established. With rich colors, and hearty stalks, Cosmos are very easy to care for and perfect for the armchair or weekend gardener.
